"He was on top of me. Not particularly heavy, but a slightly uncomfortable pressure. I was looking up at him and for a moment he was beautiful. A familiar face. A trusted face. A boy I knew. A boy I liked. A boy I felt safe with."

"It’s interesting how many of the images featured my mouth being covered. Both intentional and organic in the process of creation, the entire experience of my assault was a silencing. In the moment itself, I couldn’t cry out.

My protests were ignored, so I stopped protesting — I went numb, lost the ability to speak at all. And ever since, my silence around that night persisted. There’s certainly a comfort in silence, being able to maintain the status quo, not rock the boat, and keep this all a secret. But silence never helped anyone.

And maybe by breaking the silence, I can both heal myself and encourage others to confront their own stories, too. To have the courage to speak up because they’re not alone. No one — not even the men who hurt us — can take away our voices forever."
