This page answers questions for potential models who I've contacted directly (scouted). I've identified you as someone I might want to photograph and now you probably have many questions for me. After reviewing these questions and answers, if you still have more questions or you want to consider proceeding with a session, please contact me. If this is not for you, I appreciate a heads up too and I will not bother you again about modeling. To see a video of a shoot and hear directly from a model on his experience working with me, please visit Matthew's page by cliciking here.
SUMMARY OF THIS PAGE
I operate an established photo studio in Arlington VA (near Columbia Pike). I offer free sessions for selected models or pay them if they have experience and an exceptional look/body or I have a client who is interested in your look and has a modeling budget. My picture is at the top of this page. I take many types of poses and we do many sessions that do NOT include nude poses. You don't have to have previous experience modeling. I require a signed model release and proof of age (over 18) if we do any nude poses (and you do NOT have to pose nude). Images are used to build out my portfolio and I also have some commercial opportunities for models interested in men's fashion. For further details, check out the FAQ below.
HOW DO I KNOW YOUR A LEGITIMATE PHOTOGRAPHY STUDIO?
One thing guys often wonder is how legit my offer to photograph them is and am I representing an established photographer/studio. I am licensed as a photographer in Arlington county and the state of VA. I had a booth at the pride day festival where I met with many prospective models and clients. I typically photograph over 100 guys in a year. I have held a print show at a gallery on Capitol Hill featuring 38 artistic images. I regularly hold workshops where I teach photographers and there are over 200 photographers and models who are members of our meetup group. You can read some reviews and check out comments here). Hopefully all of this tells you that I am serious about photography and operate as an established and legal business.
HOW MUCH EXPERIENCE DO YOU HAVE? WHAT DO YOU LOOK LIKE?
I have been a photographer since I was 13 and you can see in the many galleries on my website that I have a high level of comfort and ability with many types of male images including fashion, suggestive, and artistic nudes. You can see my face in the photo at the top of this page and more below. Please note this is NOT an attempt to have sex with you and you are being asked simply to pose for me in a professional studio environment. You should not worry about this being more than a photography session and you will be treated professionally and with respect.
DO YOU PAY MODELS? ARE YOU REALLY OFFERING A FREE STUDIO SHOOT?
I do hire models for pay (modeling at a workshop, to add very strong models to my portfolio, or for a client shoot). Since I've reached out to you, I am considering either "modeling for images" (no charge to you and I provide images to you after session) or I pay you to model (and still provide images). I prefer to do a test shoot prior to hiring you for any paid work, but sometimes I make exceptions. At a test shoot, you will receive a complete set of images which you can use to build your own portfolio.
I am not trying to sell you photography services. There is real value in the images I provide as I normally charge clients $225 for a private session. In this case, I value your look and will compenstate you with either images and/or payment. If you're expecting to be paid, please make sure I communicate a pay rate via email before we confirm an appointment.
No matter what arrangement we make, you benefit by receiving high quality images that you can use for your personal use AND some experience modeling. Plus, some models end up getting more paid work after we do a first session, such as modeling at one of our workshops. That often leads to even more contacts with photographers and more paid jobs. Please, try to think longer term potential and benefits to you including great images since if I have never met or worked with you, it is hard to justify a high fee the first time together.
One of the models I approached recently wrote a story about his experience in his blog - you may find it interesting to see what he experienced in advance, during, and after the session.
CAN YOU HELP ME MAKE MONEY MODELING?
I often hear of paid modeling opportunities and if we work together at least one time and I feel that you have a natural ability to connect with the camera and the results are strong, I may recommend you for future work that is paid. Between other photographers seeking models (I run a workshop with hundreds of members) and content publishers (eg. catalogs or other print/web venues), I am often asked if I know strong male models. I would never promise a lucrative career to anyone and for the most part, the engagements are not very highly paid, but many are paid. I post specific modeling opportunities on the model casting page. I do have some commercial clients in the men's fashion retailing industry and they're actively seeking new male models - typically ages late 20's to mid 40's.
WHY DO I WANT TO PHOTOGRAPH NEW MODELS?
I am always seeking to expand my portfolio and you have a look and/or body that I admire. Also, I offer several workshops and I like to bring in new models for our photographers to shoot. Those assignments usually pay $75 to $100 per 2 hour workshop. I am also interested in growing my portfolio of images and havng new models helps me do that. Often, prior to being invited to model at a workshop, we will have done a private shoot so we can have a chance to meet and work together before introducing you to photographers at a workshop. Also, my commercial clients want to meet new talent for possible campaigns.
WHERE DO YOU SHOOT?
I often do the session in my studio located in Arlington VA (near Columbia Pike). I also love working on location/outdoors. I operate a professional photography studio. I do not operate out of a spare bedroom.
HOW WILL MY PHOTOS BE USED?
I am seeking to expand my images portfolio. A model release that is signed by models clearly outlines examples of how images may be used and these include display on the web (such as this site), potential sale of images/printed photos ("Art Galleries"), and use in marketing my services as a photographer. Models have a right to specifically exclude any rights that they are not comfortable with.
I have exhibited at gallery shows and I am interested in creating new exciting content for potential future shows. If the work is for a client, a model release will also clearly outline those rights granted to the client.
DO I HAVE TO MODEL NUDE?
NO. Many models do not and that is totally fine.
You can tell me exactly what works for you - you should NEVER pose in any manner for anyone that you are not comfortable with. Some models are ok with everything (face and full frontal), others prefer no face if full frontal nude visible or no nudes at all - just face and maybe in underwear, or suggestive images such as nude pose but can't clearly see frontal view. It's all good with me and you should clearly identify up front what you're 100% comfortable with in terms of poses. I respect all limits. A great example of some creative suggestive shots is the model "Luke" - check out his galleries for some ideas on how I have hidden full frontal nudity while including a naked man in the shot.
Checkout the video one model posted about his experience modeling nude for the first time - at bottom of Ben's gallery page.
Some guys like to do nude poses and that is totally fine and sometimes face is not part of those shots. Some like to play it by ear and see how comfortable they are, and I'm fine with that too. If you want to get into our model database where you can clearly outline all ofyour requirements, you can complete our model casting form.
If you're into nude photography and want to see some of my more explicit work, please contact me and I'll provide a URL and password to access these private galleries. The nude work is kept seperate from my main site and is not widely accessible to the public (private URL and password protected).
DO I HAVE TO SIGN ANYTHING?
To be legally compliant, I require that all models who pose nude sign a form confirming their age (and they must present a government issued ID as well). I also request ALL models that pose for me to sign a model release (unless they are paying me and then they have the option to skip this). The model release grants me permission to use the images including posting on my website. More info on legal requirement is here. I will send you a copy of my standard model release prior to our session (part of the confirmation PDF doc I always send).
I DON'T LOOK LIKE A MODEL - WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO PHOTOGRAPH ME?
As you can see from my portfolio, I shoot all types of guys. I like to appeal to a wide audience with my work. I consider all poses and since I've reached out to you already, I am interested in either your body and/or your face. If you want to do nudes WITHOUT YOUR FACE and you require NO FACE even if G rated shots, I am only interested if you have a great body.
WHO MAINTAINS THE RIGHTS TO THE PHOTOS?
When doing a free session or one where I pay the model, I retain the rights to the images. However, I include in my model release form permission for you to use them as you desire for your personal use and you would be expected to include a photo credit. I have outlined my expectations regarding sharing images and providing me with photo credit here.
DO YOU MAINTAIN THE PRIVACY OF YOUR MODELS?
Yes. The model release will clearly state what type of images I can share publicly (face, no face, nude, etc.). In terms of who you are (name, etc.) that is private. You can decide what first name to use with the images I post and if someone asks me about you, I won't give more information unless you have indicated you are comfortable with me sharing details. I do not share your contact information with others.
DO YOU PROVIDE MAKEUP?
In general, I prefer to retouch on the computer after the shoot vs. makeup which can often look fake in the images.
HOW DO I PROCEED?
Let me know you've read all this and you want to proceed - you can email me at firstname.lastname@example.org. Let me know best time/days to meet, type of poses you might want to do, and confirm ok doing in exchange for images vs. being paid.
If possible, please attach a recent photo to your email. It is not required if I have already seen your picture, but it helps remind me who you are.
Once we agree on the details above, we can arrange a time/day that works for you (I am very flexible and can often do daytime, evenings until around 9 and some weekends). Upon confirmation of the date, I ask that you send me your telephone # to confirm we're set. I will email you a confirmation doc with all details inc luding studio address and copy of forms you will need to sign. I will not call you unless there is an issue with the schedule.
If you prefer to chat on the telephone as a next step, feel free to request me to call you or try me at (202) 525-6069.
FAQ for Scouted Models
Sample Posing Options
Total G rated or underwear including face.
Nude or partial remove of pant, but can't see genitals (hidden from view) and face is visible. These are called "suggestive poses". Might show all or part of backside.
Below are example images showing a wide variety of options for posing. You are in control and can decide which of these appeal to you. Before our session (ideally when we confirm an appointment), we will discuss what you're comfortable with. When you arrive, we will sit down and go through your thoughts one last time before the shoot. The model release you sign will clearly detail what limits are in place for your images, so there will be no misccommunication about your desires for poses to be shared.
In addition to the types of poses displayed here, we also do nudes (full frontal and erotic poses with or without face). Please email for more information to view example images (you must state that you're at least 18 years old to view).
